The LA Times, the paper of record for the city where 90 percent of social status is inversely proportional to body mass index, reviewed “the latest group of fitness DVDs created by and for exercisers 40 and up, selecting a few of the more interesting or effective workouts.” Ready, go:
The Times’ Take: “The hourlong video starts with a Pilates core workout then moves on to qi gong-inspired movement work and stretches, as well as segments strengthening the legs and arms. Each can be done individually or in one long workout.”
Price: $14.95. Available at Amazon.com and Healthhabitravels.com.
Toning to the Oldies / Sweating to the Oldies 5
The Times’ Take: Two videos here. “One focuses on his brand of cardio dance, the other on circuit training with resistance bands. The better of the two is the 30-minute toning video. In this no-impact workout, he manages to elevate your heart rate and provide an effective strength workout for beginner and some intermediate exercisers.”
Price: $14.99. Available at RichardSimmons.com and other online stores.
Jazzercise: Jazz Cardio Strength Stretch
The Times’ Take: “The cardio segments are a blast from the aerobics past, with classic moves such as the chassé , skip hop, grapevine and hamstring curl. There are a few kickboxing segments with jabs, punches and kicks, but no complicated combinations or choreography.”
Price: $14.99. Available at Jazzercise.com and other online outlets.
Keeping Fit With Andrea Metcalf (Pilates, Cardio and Strength)
The Times’ Take: “These are not “easy-does-it” workouts, even though they are marketed to people age 40, 50 “and beyond.” Though they incorporate many modifications, quite a few of the exercises in the Pilates and strength workouts will be challenging for the fitness beginner  of any age  including such poses as the plank with one-armed rows, or the side plank with rear fly.”
Price: $34.99 for the three-pack of DVDs (not sold separately). Available at Acacialifestyle.com and other online outlets.
