Every so often, one of our most useful lies turns out to be true, and there’s nothing we can do about. So it is with Guinness, long alleged to be “good for you” by its makers, and longer still by its drinkers. Now comes a study from the University of Wisconsin suggesting that a pint of Guinness a day may work as well as a low dose aspirin to prevent heart clots that raise the risk of heart attacks. The BBC reports on the study, which tested the health-giving properties of stout against lager by giving it to dogs who had narrowed arteries similar to those in heart disease. The researchers found that those given the Guinness had reduced clotting activity in their blood, but those given lager did not. Why is that? The researchers suggest that “antioxidant compounds” in the Guinness, similar to those found in certain fruits and vegetables, are responsible for the health benefits because they slow down the deposit of harmful cholesterol on the artery walls. Geezer finds the research irrefutable.
I never heard of it so I looked it up.~~ Guinness stout: Made from water, barley, hops, and brewer’s yeast and treated with isinglass finings made from fishes air bladders!!!!!! And now,I don’t think I would like to drink any!!!!I don’t care if it is good You! But Not For Me!!!!!
Mild Bill, I suggest that you buy one bottle of Guinness Draught, or better yet, go to a bar and order a pint. Don’t buy the “stout” because you will find it too bitter. The flavor is delicious, and the alcohol content, contrary to popular misconception, is only slightly higher than that of American supermarket / lawnmower lagers. The “brewer’s yeast” is not what you might think; it’s brewing yeast, not the stuff that is sold in health food stores. A life without Guinness would be a hard one indeed.
No!!! I think a life without Guinness, would be a good life indeed!! If you would drink this Crap! You’ll drink anything! Sorry, but there are better things to drink than this dude. Good luck, drink up, I’ll pass!
It’s a well known fact that during the dark days of world war2,British women nursing their newborn babies were given a pint of Guiness Stout a day to assist their lactation!
Mike G. is 100% correct about new mums in England getting Guiness. My Brit hubby likes to relate that fact.
In fact I “snagged” him because I was willing to drink the “Liffy water” (that’s Guiness—the brewery was on the Liffy River in Ireland), when we’d go the Irish pubs in Toronto, when we were first dating! Tho’ I must confess, I usually prefer an ale.
