If Sex Is Good For Health, How Good Is It?

We’ve all read about the health benefits of sex: it’s good for the heart, it’s good for the prostate, it’s good for the marriage, and it’s definitely good for marketing departments of all kinds. But is it really good for our health? And how exactly do we know that. Those are two questions asked by the Wall Street Journal, which reminds us that the vast majority of all research about sex relies on data provided by people, who, if they lie about anything, probably lie about sex.  As for the science part, it is true, the paper reports, that arousal boosts the production of dopamine (a good thing) as well as oxytocin, which promotes bonding, reduces fear and stimulates endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. All of the above, the Journal asserts, provides a lasting effect that helps people handle stress. What sex is supposed to be great for but isn’t, the Journal reports, is exercise. In fact, sex generally burns an estimated five calories per minute, or by one very discouraging comparison, the equivalent of light housework.
