From the Loudon County, Virginia police department, via the Washington Post, come these five tips for making sure that the only thing you lose at the gym is weight:
Take in only what you absolutely need.
Leave your wallet and cellphone in your car, secured in the trunk.
Choose lockers near the end of the row, because they can be seen by more people and are less likely to be tampered with.
If you use your own lock to secure your property, don’t make it a cheap one (i.e., don’t use a $5 lock for a $300 phone).
If your property is stolen, report it so the police can compare the information to other incidents.
Don’t use a locker at the very end of the row where the edge of the door is exposed. It is easiest to get a crow bar between the locker door and the frame at the very end of a row. It happened to me. How anyone could walk into a locker room and literally tear the lock and the hasp off the locker and not be observed is amazing. Inside job?
Use the small lockers that are in the view of the front counter for your valuables. One YMCA has them directly across from the front counter and Goodlife has video cameras monitoring them.
Where do you put them when someone in town has a key. Somehow they made a key or they use something to unlock the car. They do it all the time. Once in the car they turn the rearview mirror verticle. Also once in the car they can open the trunk.
