Having Few Friends Is A Health Risk

Want to increase your chances of living a long life? Make some friends. That's the advice of researchers at Brigham Young University, who reviewed nearly 150 studies of social ties and longevity. The Washington Post reports that the researchers found that the health risk of having few social connections was akin to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and more dangerous than being obese or not exercising in terms of shaving years off your life. According to the newspaper, strong social ties also may help stave off memory loss as you age; reduce stress; boost immunity; help you lose weight and keep it off; and buffer against depression.
