For Fast (And Cheap) Pain Relief, Cross Your Arms

Want really fast pain relief, at a price anyone can afford? Try crossing your arms. The Boston Globe reports that scientists from University College London gave eight people a four millisecond pin prick of “pure pain” when their arms were crossed and not crossed. They found that participants had a lower perception of pain intensity when their arms were crossed, compared to not crossed. They also found that the lessened pain corresponded to a weaker electrical response from their brain measured via electroencephalography (EEG).What’s up with that? The researchers theorize that it could have something to do with the brain’s mapping of the right side and left side of the body, which may be disrupted when arms are crossed.
