Fish Oil Greases Joint Pain

Science has yet to reveal if fish suffer from joint pain, but there is mounting evidence that certain fish oils can do wonders for humans who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. C. Claiborne Ray reports in the New York Times on research into what just three grams a day of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), both omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, could do for people with rheumatoid arthritis. The researchers found that after 12 weeks, study participants reported reduced morning stiffness and fewer tender joints. And in another study of 250 osteoarthritis patients, similar fish oil doses led to significant improvement in overall pain and reduction in NSAID use.
