It’s not a lock, but research presented at the American College of Cardiology conference in New Orleans this week suggests that regular fasting may reduce the risk of heart disease. The New York Times reports that when researchers asked 200 patients who were undergoing an X-ray exam of the blood vessels and heart chambers if they engaged in regular fasting, they found that people who fasted regularly had a 58 percent lower risk of coronary disease compared with those who said they didn’t fast. Gentle readers should note well that 90 percent of the patients were Mormons, who also refrain from smoking and drinking. The Times reports that the findings are important because they affirm the results of an earlier, larger study that found a similar association between fasting and heart disease among 448 patients.
How often is “regular” fasting??
The hardest thing for our system to do is digest food. This probably puts as much or more stress on us, as stress itself. Just not constant, and for shorter durations. Fasting gives the body a break from that stress. It allows the body to catch up, and completely rid itself of the left overs from the food we have ingested. A cleansing. There are other benefits as well that have little to do with the body, in my beliefs. Read all about that…
Did you get an answer on how often “regular” is?
I know that the Bible refers to fasting. Is that what you mean? Do you have an idea of how often or how long somone should fast?
Rholsonback, that is indeed what I meant. My comments are based on my opinion. I am not a Doctor, and could not take responsibility for how my opinion would effect you. I know that some people fast on a weekly basis. Others do it on an as needed basis depending on how their body feels. I would think that any Doctor should be able to explain to you better than me, but since I do not go to Doctors, I have no way to know that for sure. Again, just my opinion, arrived at from what I read in research, and hear about from others.
