Exercise Prevents Silent Strokes

Silent strokes, small infarcts that don't come with typical stroke symptoms but do damage the brain and increase the risk for a major stroke, are far more common than most people think, mainly because people rarely know when they've had one. One recent study of people over 65 showed that 31 percent had suffered a silent stroke. Now comes a study from Columbia University researchers that suggests that people who do regular moderate or intense exercise are 40 percent less likely to have a silent stroke. Medical News Today reports that the researchers studied brain scans of more than 1,200 people, and questioned them about their exercise habits. The researchers found evidence of silent strokes in 16 percent off the study pool, and they found that while moderate or intense exercise diminished the likelihood of a silent stroke, there was no difference in risk between those people who did light exercise and those who did none.
