File under It's not just what you eat, it's when you eat it: people who eat more carbs at dinner (rather than breakfast or lunch) lose more weight than those who eat the same amount of carbs per day, but spread them out over three meals. The Los Angeles Times reports that researchers randomly assigned 100 obese Israeli police officers to one of two diets for six months: a standard low-calorie diet or a low-calorie diet that offered more carbs at dinner. Both diets contained about 1,300 to 1,500 calories per day and both had the same nutritional breakdowns: 20 percent protein, 30 percent to 35 percent fat, and 45 percent to 50 percent carbohydrate. But those in the experimental diet ate more protein than carbs at breakfast and lunch and loaded up on carbs at dinner, while the control group scattered their carbs more evenly throughout the day. After six months the group that ate more carbs at dinner saw more weight loss, body fat mass reduction and lower abdominal circumference than the control group. It also had higher satiety levels during the day than did the control group.
Science is the answer, and we need as much of it as we can get. But how and when it is presented by the media to the public – especially regarding the topics of food, weight/dieting and health – is a real problem. And this “study” is as good an example as any. No wonder most people pay no attention to what we know is good for them. Each successive “study” seems to contradict the previous ones in the public’s mind. Add the fundamental differences genetics creates to identical circumstances and most folks have given up trying to sort out “what’s right”. Reports like this are worse than worthless when presented in the LA Times.
Science certainly has it’s place. I totally agree with you Tim. Success seems to be found by those that find what works best for them. There does not appear to be an across the board rule beyond fundamentals. Some can eat till they are stuffed, and never gain a pound. Me, I can just watch people eat and gain weight. What does seem to work best for me is to obtain my food as close to it’s raw source as possible, organic if possible, cook minimally if at all, and eat smaller portions many times a day. fundamentals that I think would work for most anyone. And NEVER anything already prepared in a package of any kind!!!
