From the magazine that brings us annual guides to the best colleges, best hospitals, and best nursing homes, now comes its annual list of best diets for all sorts of things, including “weight loss,” “diabetes,” “heart-healthy”, and “commercial.” Web MD gives us a peek at US News & World Report’s list of Best Diets for Healthy Eating, which we assume will lead to healthy living. Or not. And the winners are:
- DASH Diet, 4.8. Endorsed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this is heavy on produce and low in saturated fat and salt.
- TLC Diet, 4.7. The National Institutes of Health developed this plan, which is high in fiber and calcium and low in saturated fat.
- Mediterranean Diet, 4.6. Lots of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetable here; also salmon and olive oil. Good news: red wine is encouraged.
- Mayo Clinic Diet, 4.5. Includes foods with low energy density, such as fruits and vegetables, so dieters can eat more while eating fewer calories.
- Volumetrics Diet, 4.5. Another low energy-dense food, with lots of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nonfat dairy, and lean meats.
