12 Commandments for Proper Gym Behavior

The Boston Globe asked readers to submit their greatest pet peeves about misbehavior at the gym. Here's what they got:

1. Thou shalt not talk on the cell phone.

2. Thou shalt not fail to wipe down equipment.

3. Thou shalt not lounge on equipment.

4. Thou shalt not leave broken equipment.

5. Thou shalt not wear inappropriate clothing.

6. Thou shalt not grunt.

7. Thou shalt not play loud music.

8. Thou shalt not get too close.

9. Thou shalt not let children play on equipment.

10. Thou shalt not wear too much cologne.

11. Thou shalt not go to the gym while sick.

  1. When working out with a buddy remember other people want to use the machine so don’t use 3x the time, chatting!

  2. Reality check. Having worked out faithfully in gyms for almost 40 years, I am proud to say I have broken every rule at one time or another except #10 on too much cologne. So I can get a perfect bad-ass score, I would change it to “Thou shalt not work out while caked in dirt.”

  3. Thou shalt not leave free weights un-removed from machines/bars unless the person waiting behind you requests it.

  4. fritzie = idiot

  5. Most gyms won’t allow overhead squats or power snatches (to name a few) which are great excersises that if you are lifting at or near your max will require you to drop the weights. If my gym has bumpers (which it does) and allows me to drop the weights (which it also does) I could care less what the other people think. Same with grunting on squats. Now screaming when doing a 25# dumbell curl?…no way. My biggest peeves at the gym are 1) people who fail to re-rack weights and 2) pigs that throw their used towels on the locker room floor for the staff to pick up.

  6. Thou shalt not use the sauna and steam room naked!
    For God’s, cover your junk
