Are we merry yet? Maybe. But maybe we shouldn’t be. Merriness experts at Yale University remind us that the relentless (and commercially driven) pursuit of merriment that surrounds us this time of year can lead us to some very unmerry states of mind. The video below explains, and kindly offers these ten ways to beat the Holiday Blues:
1. Keep expectations real. Don’t be fooled into believing you should be merry 24/7.
2. If you have suffered a loss, grieve. Sadness does not get holidays off.
3. Get outside; sunlight and fresh air are good for your spirit.
4. Go easy on the alcohol. In the long run, it doesn’t cheer up anyone.
5. Do not go into debt. Small gifts are as often as good or better than large gifts.
6. Exercise, eat well and do your best to sleep well.
7. Express love and appreciation to those you love and appreciate.
8. Call a friend and go have a cup of coffee.
9. Help others; volunteer, teach a child to read, give a neighbor a ride.
10. If you are having thought of self-harm, or if you know of someone who is, call for professional help.
