To Improve Performance, Just Chill, Literally, With a Slushie

Here’s a tip for readers who would like to run harder and longer in hot temperatures: chill, as in chill your body before you start, with a slushie. Gina Kolata reports in the New York Times on research conducted by a New Zealand endurance athlete who gave slushies to young male recreational athletes before they ran on a treadmill in a hot room. The results, as published by the American College of Sports Medicine, show that “compared with cold water, ice slurry ingestion lowered preexercise
rectal temperature, increased submaximal endurance running time in the
heat (+19% +/- 6%), and allowed rectal temperature to become higher at
exhaustion. As such, ice slurry ingestion may be an effective and
practical precooling maneuver for athletes competing in hot
environments.” Geezer apologizes for the researchers focus on rectal temperatures.

  1. As for the slushie… to get them slushie, they have to ahve a buttload of sugar! Oops..another rectal reference!

  2. I’ve heard of brain freeze, but butt freeze?

  3. When I am exercising, I seldom worry nor am I overly concerned with my “rectal temps”…there are just some place a thermometer should never go…
