Turns out exercise isn't just good for you: it's also good for your employer. A study conducted at Bristol University found that people who exercise during the workday performed significantly better at their jobs in three
areas measured: known as mental-interpersonal, output and time
demands."
A news release from the university reports that 200 people who held desk-based jobs took part in the study. They exercised on a
fairly regular basis using worksite-provided facilities, such as the
gym or exercise classes. Volunteers filled out short questionnaires about their
mood on two working days of their choice: one set for a day they
decided to exercise and a second set for another day. At the end of
each day, they answered questions about how productive the day had
been. The researchers found that exercise
helped re-energise and improve concentration, made people feel calmer
and particularly assisted with problem solving. Networking
opportunities also seemed to thrive.
