Statins and Sex Drive; A Diminuendo

A reader of the L.A Times reports that the moment he stopped taking statins, he felt like a teenager again, and asks the newspaper's health answer person for comment. The good news is, the reader is not alone. The bad news is, the reader is not alone.

"We have heard from other readers that statins (Crestor, Lipitor,
lovastatin, simvastatin, etc.) may sometimes contribute to sexual
difficulties, and research confirms this," the experts write. "More recently, Italian researchers have reported a link between statin
therapy and hypogonadism (reduced testosterone)."

You mean his is the full conent of the article???? Why did you bother to even put it here??????????

  2. I noted that some 8 years ago when my doctor put me on Lipitor. That and an increasing amount of pain when walking up stairs. Stopped taking Lipitor, the problems went away…….

  3. Of course some people have side effects and can’t take them, but there is risk of NOT taking them too.
Besides antibiotics in the first half
of the century, statins have probably done more to
increase lifespan in the 20th century than
any other single factor. (from 50 in 1900 to 78 in 2000)
So, if you are prescribed a statin and decide there is a side effect that makes you not take it, you should also consider the risk of NOT taking them as well. The consequences could be heart attack or stroke which might be much worse than the side effects if
they are mild. Always have to look at any drug as a benefit/risk balance.

  4. There are other cholesterol medications that work differently than statins. I too had the side effects of Lipitor. I told my doctor and he prescribed Zetia. The side effects of statins are potentially dangerous. If you have side effects from statins, ask your doctor for something else.

after taking Simvastatin for about a year my feet and legs began tingling so much I could not sleep. Ibuprofen stopped it but I was taking 3 a day. I stopped taking this drug and the tingling is slowly going away(2 months). I have changed Dr. because I noticed the tingling soon after starting the drug. I advised the Dr. who told me it wasn’t the Statin causing this. I am 66 years old and my cholestoral was 250 when I started.Dr. gave me 80 mg to take at bedtime. No doubt Statins are helpful but be careful and don’t always believe your Doctor. We are all different and they seem to just group us for these experiements with pills.

been on generic for liptor and hi-cholesterol is down from 319 to 124, but it has made me “limp” and just abt can’t hav relations….but am scared to stop taking it…what do you think????

  7. Whatever happened to “first do no harm”? If it makes you sick, unable to function sexually and makes you feel like garbage, it’s not worth anything. I believe a better explanation for arterial plaque is inflammation with an immune response that attempts to heal it with cholesterol just as it does in every other part of the body. The theory that it just randomly deposits itself against artery walls makes no sense. Inflmmation, however, can be treated with aspirin and there is no money in it………
