Post-Workout Dip Makes Us Eat More

So it turns out that a dip in a pool is not the best finale to a workout, at least not if the workout was intended to keep the pounds off. Jeannine Stein reports in the LA Times that Australian researchers found that people who spend 20 minutes in a pool (heated or cool) after a workout feel more hunger than those who don't. Stein tells us that the researchers tested 10 active men who ran on a treadmill for 40 minutes. After the workout, one group was immersed chest-high in cold water (59 degrees Fahrenheit), another in tepid water (91 degrees Fahrenheit), and in a third group sat and rested, all for 20 minutes. The men were then presented with a buffet breakfast and invited to eat as much as they wanted. The researchers found that average calorie intake of those who sat in cold water was 489, and those who sat in the warmer water ate 517 calories. Those who simply sat and rested ate only 409 calories. Those who sat in water also ate more carbs and protein. When the researchers tested the men for blood glucose, lactate, and hormones such as leptin and ghrelin, they found found lower levels of leptin, which decreases appetite, and higher levels of ghrelin, which increases appetite, in the water groups.
