In news that will surprise many discriminating and free-spending food shoppers, British researchers have concluded that organic foods don't offer any greater nutritional benefit than conventionally grown foods. The Tufts Health and Nutrition Letter reports that after reviewing 162 scientific papers about the nutritional value of various foods, scientists at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine found only a handful of differences in nutritional content for organic foods, and no differences with "any public health relevance.†Researchers did not, however, address questions of pesticide or other residues or the environmental impact of different growing techniques.
The advantage is that they have not been genetically altered or engineered, have not been treated with heavy doses of insecticides and other toxins and have not been processed to the point of being unrecognizable by both one’s eyes and one’s digestive system.
Humans are a relative newcomer in the evolutionary scheme of things and it may well take a few eons for our digestive tracts to adapt to our ability to alter the food we evolved so as to consume.
Although this was published and conducted in England, the vast majority of European experts do not necessarily agree with the findings.
this should not be a surprise to anyone who understands the difference. It never was about nutrition. Always was about the advantage as pointed out. NO HARMFUL CHEMICALS ADDED! NO GENETIC ALTERING!
And I find it ridiculous that anyone would spend resources to conclude that there is anything else to consider. Come on people…
This is a totally meaningless study. A study of studies over the last 50 years. Who did these studies? Who funded these studies? Nonesense. I could use other adjectives, but would probably be removed from the site. Agribusiness is so invested in giving the public a reason to continue eating their poison rather than good food.
The school of ( hygiene & tropical medicine )!!Now that should tell you right their whats wrong!!!Maybe they can tell you if the organic foods need a bath because something stinks here and its not the food!! WRONG PEOPLE,WRONG SCHOOL,WRONG INFO,the people of Europe should be real proud of this report!Once again, just think these people went to collage some where!,are did they? Cant tell by their report, can you?
stoopid study, I never thought organic food had more nutrients, I am happy to know that it’s not soaked in pesticide, herbiside, and chemical fertilizers. someone should study who’s gettin funds to do these “studies”
Did Tyson and Green Giant pay for the study? I agree absolutely agree that this studyn is a joke and influenced by American big food companies (maye the joke USDA.)
I’m happy to join this chorus. Most people didn’t expect organic foods to be significantly higher in nutrients! We just want the garbage removed for heavens sake. When foods from your common grocery stores are tested for pesticides, many have levels that are scary. I bet you have all seen the “ten foods you should by organic” articles.
This “research” is a waste. Find out what we are really ingesting – it might tell you more about cancer than the genome project.
I feel confident eating my home grown beans, blue berries, squash, plums, etc. I know what’s on them and in them, and I don’t need some ink pushing stuffies to tell me that. One word…DUH!
Who said they had more nutrition? They are better because they dont have chemicals from oil based fertilizers.
It was never about an increase in nutritional value it is about taste, lack of pesticides and not being a genetically modified organism with who knows what in its makeup. It is pure food without all the added crap that big Ag seems to think it needs to make profit.
The spin-doctors are at it….I bet if we saw whom backed this study it would be a shell company owned by Con Agra or some other food giant. What the H does nutrition have to do with the fact that I don’t want my daughter to get her period at 11 because of hormones she ate her whole young live. Or, the intestinal tract diseases like colonitis or crones….I bet that this is also from all the JUNK (and that word is used lightly). And, sorry for the stereotype….but when has England become the bastion of good hygiene? I lived there…..and give me a break! And ” Researchers did not, however, address questions of pesticide or other residues or the environmental impact of different growing techniques”. I wonder why? Ba ha ha ha ha!
