Male Menopause Is Not a Myth, But It Might As Well Be

The bad news, for men worried about the medical condition known as "male menopause," is that it is not a myth. The good news is that it might as well be. That's because, according to research conducted at the University of Manchester, England, the medical condition affects only about 2 percent of men. The BBC reports that when researchers from the university looked at the testosterone levels of 3,369 men aged 40 to 79 from eight European medical centers, and questioned the men about their sexual, physical and mental health, they concluded that "male menopause," also known as late-onset hypogonadism, was over diagnosed. The conclusion led the researchers to warn doctors to go easy on testosterone therapy, a preferred treatment for the condition, and one that is apparently prescribed far more often than is useful.
