How to Make the Other Christmas List: A Family Health History

Here's one gift that Santa won't bring, but if you can get it together it can benefit your family for generations: a comprehensive family history of health issues that are influenced by our genes. Those include heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, some birth defects, and mental illnesss, which can be hard to pin down. (Is uncle Tom really crazy, or is he just excited because he gets to wear the Santa suit again?) Holiday gatherings are an excellent time to collect the data, and the U.S. Surgeon General's office provides a handy online tool to help us out. The National Society of Genetic Counselors also has some great advice on what information to collect and what to do with it, mainly, update it every couple of years and be sure to share it with you doctor.
