In Scotland, where the winter blahs have been honed to high art, researchers wondered how much exercise, exactly, it should take to escape the gravity of “psychological distress.” The study, which correlated exercise and mental health of nearly 20,000 Scots and is published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found a surprising answer …not much. The researchers found that mood improvement can start with as little as 20 minutes a week of any physical activity–even housework or yard work, which may offer the benefit of having a clean house. The New York Times reports that researchers also found that “participation in vigorous sports activities†tended to be the “most beneficial for mental health.â€Â
