Stunning indeed! The stun factor would have no doubt grown exponentially the farther back in time the graph would have gone. Four things I believe are the cause.
The garbage that is allowed to be called and sold as food, the poison allowed to be put in otherwise good food, the false notion that has taught us we need to eat the enormous amounts that we do, and the luxurious mechanization of our lifestyle with such things as power equipment, clothes washers, dishwashers, and of course the T.V. that usually comes with a couch or lounger. What a shameful generation we have become!
What a dreadful presentation. I wish they hadn’t tried to be so cute. I hope this isn’t the trend for graphical representation.
What kind of graph is this? Can’t we look at something that is somewhat more traditional? This new math is killing me!
We have got to push back on restaurants and fast food outlets which promote biggie, huge, whopper, monster, double-sized portions. It’s an odious part of our culture, but the chart overlooks the fact that our population is aging so the increase in BMI over 25 is in part due to that fact. Which, by-the-way, doesn’t excuse the rest of us for the scum we choose to eat. Remember also, a combination of jawboning and intelligent legislation cut tobacco use in half and drastically reduced DUIs. We need that again. Most of us are too lazy to do it on our own.
The economic impacts of saving $80 billion a year on treating obeisty related illness will have an amplified positive impact in lower healthcare costs, smaller deficits and increased productivity. Obama, are you listening? Here is your chance to shine!
Under no circumstance should nutrition or any other factor be legislated by government. If people had to pay higher insurance premiums by being at higher risk, they may pay more attention to their health. that’s how it works for auto insurance, those at higher risk pay more. they same shoul dhold for obesity (and smokers for that matter) pay higher premiums to offset the additional burden on the system. Those who live a healthier lifestyle will be rewarded with lower premiums.
I agree in part A.G.R., the sad truth is, that if Government was doing what it was always suppose to do, it would have stepped in a long time ago, on behalf of the people it is suppose to serve, and put a halt to the destruction of the health of it’s people, by the greed for, and in the name of the “all mighty dollar”. The health care crisis, the National debt, and the lives and health of our young & old would not be in the current shape it’s in. Is there anyone who understands this, think for a second that it’s not a National Security Issue? I sure don’t.
Government has nothing to do with this over weight problem. The truth be told its up to the individual on weather he or she well eat fast food and at which portion they will eat. Self control is the only way to go.
