At least when compared to hormone therapy and external-beam radiation, surgery looks like the best route to a long life for men diagnosed with high-risk prostate cancer, according to research conducted at the University of California in San Francisco. ScienceDaily reports that researchers at the school analyzed data from 7,538 men with localized disease, and compared
outcomes across treatments after adjusting for risk and age. Unsurprisingly, for men at low levels of risk, there were very few deaths, and differences among the treatment options were small. The
survival differences increased substantially for men at intermediate
and high risk. The researchers found that men who were treated with hormone therapy were three times more likely to die of prostate cancer when compared to those treated with radical prostatectomy (surgical removal of the prostate). Men who were treated with external-beam radiation therapy
were twice as likely to die of prostate cancer when compared to men treated with prostatectomy.
I have prostate cancer… I have been treated with inplant of radiation seeds. After the implants were in for 6-7 months my PSA was 4.7…we just watched to see what next PSA test would show…Well after a cpl months we did another PSA test and it came back at 12.7,Doctor seems to think it was a fantom reading. So now waiting a cpl month to do another test.
Any ideas?????????
It is amazing when we accept a cure that is worse then the disease…
Why do we fear death so? Why can’t we accept the natural way of life and live with dignity to the end of the same.
No more voodoo for me, thanks.
My dad has his prostate removed about three years ago and it seems to have worked for him. If the cancer hasn’t spread beyond the prostate, I say have the thing removed. My dad had it done the old fashioned way with a big cut. I suggested that he find a surgeon who could do it orthoscopically and I suggest the same for you if you choose to go the surgical route. Whatever you decide to do, I wish nothing but the best for you. -Don-
If the cancer hasn’t spread outside of the prostate, consider having a robotic prostatectomy. Recovery time is minimal. I was back at work in 10 days. Of course the possibility of side effects do exist, but they are not a certainty. After considering my options, unlike what William would do, I chose to live!
