That suggestion comes from New York Times’ Patient Money columnist Walecia Konrad, along with some recommendations for replacements. Like what? Konrad thinks YMCA’s are pretty good these days, and they have always been a lot less expensive than boutique fitness clubs. Many community organizations, like schools, neighborhood clubs, temples and churches offer workout facilities and sports activities for less money. Students and alumni can often get deals at colleges, and some hotels and motels allow neighbors to use the fitness room and pool for a small daily or weekly fee. Wait, there’s more, especially online. Konrad recommends the free instruction on exercises for just about every part of the body at the online exercise library at the American Council of Exercise, as well as Self magazine, where you can create and customize your own workout video: workouts.self.com. YouTube has many free exercise and aerobic videos that can be done at home. One of the most popular is “8-Minute Abs.
