Does exercise in cold weather burn more calories than exercise in warmer weather? Many people, particularly those who live in places where winter is actually wintery, would like to think so. But sadly, as the New York Times points out, the short answer is NO. The longer answer, according to Times health answer person C. Claiborne Ray, is that some of the bodily processes involved in fat metabolism are actually slowed down by cold temperatures. The Times directs readers to a 1991 study published in Sports Medicine, which spells out the discouraging news.
