Yet another reason to keep our bodies properly hydrated while working out: A new study at Tufts University has found that dehydration was associated with negative mood, including fatigue and confusion. A Tufts news release reports that researchers divided 30 students into one of two groups; a “dehydration group†not given fluids during athletics, or a control group that was given water. Participants weighed in before and after athletics to assess body water loss. After athletic activity, participants underwent cognitive tests, which included short-term memory and mood scales. Those who lost between 1 percent and 2 percent –an amount comparable to the mild dehydration some people experience in their daily lives from drinking insufficient amounts of water–were more ornery, confused and tired when compared to those who were properly hydrated.
