Cycling May Lower Male Fertility

Just five hours of cycling a week can double the likelihood of having a low sperm count, according to research conducted at the Boston University School of Public Health. A BU School of Public Health news release reports that the study, involving 2,200 men who used fertility clinics in the Boston area between 1993 and 2003, found that less than a quarter of the men who did not exercise had a low sperm count, compared to 31 percent of the frequent bike riders. Just over a quarter of the sedentary men had low total motile sperm, compared with 40 percent of the cyclists. The researchers speculate that semen may be affected by temperature increases in the scrotum or trauma while cycling.

  2. Who gives a rat’s tail about low sperm count for bikers or anyone else for that matter. This planet is already overpopulated. I can just imagine how much tax money was wasted on this study.

  3. so what happened in the asian country lots of cycling and lots of people

  4. I suppose this might be helpful if you were trying to have children and it wasn’t working and the fertility doctor said it was because you had a low sperm count. Otherwise, so what? The study would have been much more helpful if the cause of the low counts were clear. I can’t imagine why temperature changes would be a concern. If trauma were the cause, like the trauma to the penile artery that lead to impotence in some cyclists using “old fashioned” seats, that might matter a wider group.
