Cola May Weaken Bones of Women

Women who are concerned about preserving bone density may want to think about canning the cola, so to speak. The Tufts Health & Nutrition Letter reports that when researchers at Tufts Dietary Assessment and
Epidemiology Research Program looked at the bone density of the spine and three different
hip sites of more than 2,500 people in
the Framingham Osteoporosis Study,
average age almost 60, they found that for women, cola consumption
was associated with lower bone mineral
density at all three hip sites, regardless
of other risk factors. Wait, there's more: women who drank carbonated beverages that were not cola experienced no loss of bone density. The newsletter reports that 70 percent of the carbonated
beverages consumed by people in
the study were colas, all of which contain
phosphoric acid, an ingredient not typically
found in non-cola sodas.
