Alcohol and Sleep: Study Shows No Problem

For decades, popular wisdom has held that drinking alcohol interfered with a good night's sleep. Now, according to a study published in the Annals of Family Medicine, it seesms that what's popular is not always wise. The Los Angeles Times reports on the study, in which researchers at the University of Missouri analyzed questionnaires from 1,699 adults, average age 50. The researchers found that 22 percent of those surveyed reported hazardous drinking patterns while almost 48 percent reported fair or poor sleep quality. Seven percent said they had sleep apnea. But, the Times reports, with one exception (People who used alcohol to get to sleep had a much higher rate of hazardous drinking), the analysis failed to show any association between alcohol use and sleep problems.
