A Tough Life Is Good for Back Pain

People with a tough life, those who have suffered from the death of a loved one, violence, or various relationship stresses, are are less impaired by chronic back pain than people who have lived a rosier life. This news comes direct from State University at Buffalo, New York, where researchers studied 396 adults with chronic back pain, asking each to complete a survey of lifetime exposure to 37 adverse events,
including one's own or a loved one's illness/injury, sexual and
non-sexual violence, bereavement, social or environmental stress,
disaster and various relationship stresses. The subjects then reported self-rated functional impairment,
disabled employment status, frequency of back pain treatment,
prescription painkiller use and whether they currently sought treatment
for comorbid psychiatric disorders. ScienceDaily reports that the researchers found that those with some
lifetime adversity reported less physical impairment, disability and
heavy utilization of health care than those who had experienced either
no adversity or a high level of adversity.

  1. Perhaps one learns how to deal effectivley with various types of pain and is then enabled to comtinue on with his or her life more comfortably while enduring the same.
My young daughter, who has yet had no such stresses in her life is very terrified by any pain and has no understanding of how to deal with such.

  5. A tough life may be good for back pain. But “all caps” people are a pain in the arse.

Those that live a “tougher” life learn early on that pain cannot stop you. You lose your lights, heat, etc.
You keep going to keep yourself alive.

  7. I think the article is incorrect. My wife of 32 years has had plenty of stress and strive in her life and she suffers terribly from back pain. So how do you explain that one?

  8. If you are a medical doctor, I sincerely pity your patients as you bed side manner may be making them sicker than any illness they may supposedly have.
You still seem to have totally misunderstood the article. How did you ever read, if you ever read, the medical text books in school?
Please, don’t be concerned that I might be aggriavted by you and your post. I seldom become upset over the trivial.
