Study: Toxins Move Quickly From Plastic Water Bottles to Human Bodies

Geezer is now persuaded that it’s time, at long last, to toss the wonderfully lightweight and colorful water bottles that he carts from one failed athletic endeavor to the next. Why now? Largely because a new study from Harvard School of
Public Health researchers found that people who drank for just one week
from polycarbonate bottles showed a two-thirds increase in their urine of the chemical bisphenol
A (BPA). And because exposure to BPA
has been shown to interfere with reproductive development in animals and has
been linked with cardiovascular disease and diabetes in humans.
A press release from the school reports that the study’s 77 participants began Plastic-bottles with a seven-day
“washout” phase in which they drank all cold beverages from stainless steel
bottles in order to minimize BPA exposure. Participants provided urine samples
during the washout period. They were then given two polycarbonate bottles and
asked to drink all cold beverages from the bottles during the next week; urine
samples were also provided during that time.
The results showed that the participants’ urinary BPA
concentrations increased 69 percent after drinking from the polycarbonate bottles.

Would it be possible to let the public know which beverages are sold in these type containers

  2. They look like the ones Wal-mart Pharmacy’s give away. The bottles from WM dont have the lines though. Are they the same type of plastic?

  3. Give me a break. I have been drinking out of polycarbonate bottles for 40 plus years. Get a life & research something else. The small bottles are pet bottles. do some reasearch.

  4. camelbak and nalgene both make bottles that are specifically marked “no BPA’S”….

  5. “I’ve been smoking for 50 years and have not had cancer or emphysema, what are all those
    paranoid people talking about”
“I’ve been driving for 30 years without a seatbelt, come on, this seat belt thing is nonsense”
I don’t know about this current science but please think before you write.

  6. I don’t know what’s worse …the time wasted or the money wasted?

I wonder at the scientific revelance of the results. Did the BPA levels exceed the threshold limit? Was the 69% increase from a very, very tiny number to a tiny number? The resukts, as posted, seem more to incite than to inform.

  8. BPAs are known as “plasticizers” in the industry … additives to plastics which make the material more flexible after solidifying. And they ARE toxic, at least to a degree. The plastics industry has gone to great lengths to convince people they’re harmless and/or that they don’t end up in your body if you eat or drink from the plastics with BPAs in them. So — the bottom line now, according to this study (which seems pretty convincing) is that you don’t necessarily have to believe that these chemicals are harmful, but you really should believe that you are being misled by certain segments of industry. Why would that be? Because the plastics industry doesn’t have a good substitute for BPAs.

  9. WHY DO THEY DO EVERYTHING AFTER THE FACT.WHY NOT INVESTIGATE AND STUDY A SAMPLE BEFORE IT HITS THE MARKET.DO WE HAVE ANY QUALITY CONTROL ON WHAT IS MARKETABLE AND WHAT IS NOT.AGAIN I SAY MONEY TALKS, BS WALKS.

  10. Why I quit smoking 3 pks a day when I was age 39. Now 75 in great healt according to doctors. My son came home from school and said: Dad, if you seen the movie they showed us in school today, you would quit smoking. I said tell me about it. Within 3 months, I gradually quit smoking. Why? Because the pipe from your mouth to your lungs are loaded with hair like detectors. Telling you to caugh when bad things like smoke, liquids and toxins go thru to your lungs. Each time you smoke or do other comparable acts, some of these hairs die. They never grow back. When they are all gone, you have liquid and everything else going into your lungs and you don’t caugh it up because the hairs are not there to tell you to caugh. That is when your lungs fill with liquid and toxins and kill you. That is why I quit smoking. Thank God that my son came home from school and told me that. Now YOU know. It’s your choice. Take it or leave it.

  11. water bottles? milk jugs? cola bottles? ketchup, how many food products come in plastic? and has anyone tested them? what about the plastic wrappers for crackers? cereal? chips? how about the plastic for our ice trays? the plastic plates that are microwave safe. somebody needs to get real, and put out some real information.
you can test and test, and you can find something wrong. so test something that really concerns the population.

  12. It’s crazy to think that all this time we have been exposed to BPA but until this recent spur in interest over it, it was brushed under the rug. Our lives are consumed by BPA. It is in fillings in our teeth, it lines the metal in our canned foods, and in our plastic food containers. It is scary to know that BPA is found in most baby bottles and sippy cups. There are many new companies coming out with BPA free bottles though. As far as plastic drinking bottles for adults go, Camelbak has always been BPA free and Nalgene and REI are coming out with a BPA-free lines, too.
