For fortunate readers who live in parts of the country where there is no opportunity to shovel snow, L. A. Times fitness guru Karen Voight offers this alternative exercise for strengthening the upper back.
1. Place the center of a resistance band or stretch tubing under your
right foot. Grasp the ends of the band in each hand. Bend your right
knee and lean your torso forward with your arms hanging below your
shoulders. Keep your abdominals pulled in to support your spine.
2. On an exhale, point your elbows back and gradually stretch the band
as you move your hands toward your hip bones. Be sure to keep the tops
of your shoulders pressed down away from your ears. Pause for two
seconds with your hands near your hips. Lower to the start position and
repeat 12 to 16 times.
Whatever happened to chin ups to the chest, chins behind the neck, close grip pull downs to the chest and the ever popular wide grip barbell rowing, all of which seems to have worked well in the past?
I occasionally find myself not having complete faith in the new fitness gurus.
The gurus of my day were Arnold, Franco, Frank Zane, Author Jones and Mike Mentzer and what they taught worked then and still works today.
But this may be more of an old dog and new tricks…I guess I need to stay with what I know besides, at present my uppper back is fine though my knees are shot…
Thanks
