Anyone who has read a few ads for a health club membership knows how long it takes for a person to get a brand new body: six weeks. But while Geezer waits for research to reveal what psychological tests persuaded marketing departments to go with the six week mark, researchers at the University of Wisconsin have been trying figure out what kind of transformation, exactly, could possibly be completed in such a short time. The answer, according to Gina Kolata of the New York Times, is “almost none.” After six weeks of various exercises, the bodies of test subjects at the University of Wisconsin were barely changed, both when measured by objective criteria like weight or percentage of body fat, or by the perceptions of objective observers.
The real period of time needed to change the way we look, experts told the Times, is six months. And for serious and lasting change, the experts say, give it a full year.
