Endurance Athletes’ Secret Weapon: Pickle Juice

Move over Pedialyte. Yes. It seems to be true. Pickle juice is the new Pedialyte, which was the new Gatorade, not to mention the brief reign of G2. The Boston Globe reports on the wondrous Pickles-269x300 restorative powers of pickle juice, explaining that the average pickle spear contains 220 milligrams of sodium versus 110
milligrams in an 8-ounce bottle of Gatorade. The Globe warns that because natural pickle juice
should be consumed in small doses, nutritionists advise that athletes
supplement with other fluids. The Globe tells us that the maker of Pickle Juice Sport, a dill-flavored sports drink promoted
as a way to prevent muscle cramps, says it supplies several dozen teams
and more than 100 pro athletes, and Philadelphia Eagles head trainer Rick
Burkholder credits natural pickle juice with a win over the Dallas
Cowboys when on-field temperatures reached 109 degrees at Texas Stadium

    Yes it works and I swear by it. It helps me with leg cramps(actually stops them) after a weekend a weekend of calling fastpitch softball in this Texas heat. I will be a dedicated customer and consumer form now on.

  3. yes, it works, beach volleyball players have been using it for a while for cramping while playing in hot temperatures all day on the beach.

  5. I hate pickles and only hurt bad enough to try this once. On an August Louisiana day we played something like 4 softball games in six hours thru the middle of the day. I slid headfirst into second and both calves knotted up on the slide. I had to be helped to my feet. I literally could not get up. Someone brought me just a few ounces of pickle juice from the concession stand in a small cup. Between the pickle juice and a prayer I was ready to go after just a few minutes. It is the only time I can remember actually stopping cramps. Usually once you start, you’re done for the day. I believe it is better than any fluid you can get from a bottle for attacking cramps if you can get it down :).

  6. I’ve used pickle juice after workouts, and after dehydrating badly outside working in the yard, or kayaking in the hot sun. My body actually craves it after a lot of sweating. I never thought about the attributes it contains… I just knew since I was a kid that it made me feel a lot better.

  7. finally it comes to light i been drinking pickle juice for years i’ve been telling people that pickle juice was better then sport drinks who crazy now hahahaha

    I’ve drank it for years–straight out of the pickle jar–and believe it does work. Also, I’ve used it as a tonic to relieve symptoms of a hangover.

  10. I have been using Dill Pickle Juice (not kosher dill) for leg cramps for the past 20yrs. About a shot glass will relieve leg cramps for me in about 5 minutes.

    its a common known fact for those that have been in the fitness conditioning world.used it.it works!weight
    trained after i worked in constrution on hot days
    everday.helps with cramping.

  12. Yes, it does work. I have had le cramps fo the past few weeks, so severe was the pain I hardly could walk. I did drink some pickle juice and no longer have the cramps which where gone the next morning after drinking the pickle juice

    Sodium is supposed to be a no no for athletics, at least that’s what I’ve been taught as a football team trainer

  14. Too much sodium is a no-no for athletes! The smarter thing to do is prevent it before it happens. This could be done by stretching before any activities, and eating food that are high in potassium. Such as bananas or other fruits.

  15. The high school football coach at our high school used to talk about the benefits of athletes drinking small amounts of “pickle juice”. This was many years ago.
    How many years? 46 …… (way back in 1963)

  16. I am 45 my mother and father are both nurses and in the summer we always had to eat a big pickle with lunch. I can`t remember ever getting cramps

    Look at KUMBUCHA TEA. Much more and better results reported. Basically it is LIVE PICKLE JUICE OR VINIGAR.

  20. I USE TO USE PICKLE JUICE BEFORE OR DURING A RUGBY GAME ABOUT 15 YERAS AGO. I FOUND OUT IT STOPPED A LOT OF CRAMPS. BUT THAT IS WHAT WATER DOES FOR YOU TOO. THERE A LOT OF HEALTHIER THINGS ON THE MARKET THEN PICKLE JUICE. IT WAS A FADE ABOUT 15 YERAS AGO AS IT IS TODAY.
    YOU JUST NEED TO GET IN BETTER SHAPE AND STAY AWAY FROM ALCOHOL THE NIGHT BEFORE. WE HAVE CHANGED OUR DIETS OR WORK ETHICS AND TRAINING SCHEDULES NOT TO BE DEPENDED ON PICKLE JUICE. YOU CAN NOT REALLY ON SALT INTAKE ALONE. BETTER EXERCISE AND WATER INTAKE IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS.

  21. I’ve been cycling for 6 months and I would cramp-up like crazy, even on a 20 mile ride. I would consume water and all kinds of sports drinks to keep myself hydrated through out the week and I would still cramped up. I sweat very easily, it runs in my family, let’s just say, “I rain”. My Sister-In Law suggested that I try Pickle Juice, since they used it in the MS 150.
    Wow what a difference, I carry a small 4 ounce bottle for my 30 to 40 mile rides and a 16 ounce bottle of Pickle Juice, 20 ounce water with a 100 ounce Camel Bak with my favorite Sport drink for my 60 to 100 mile rides. Sounds like an overkill in weight, but like I said, “I rain”, besides I’m in training. So don’t let you friends discourage you about the camel bak. You know if you sweat alot or not, your friends will get over it.
    I’ll take a sip of Pickle Juice before the ride and take 2 to 3 drinks of my G2. During the ride, if my legs get tighten up or if I feel a cramp coming on, I take a half mouth full of Pickle Juice and take 2 to 3 drinks of my G2.
    I also take 2 drinks of my G2 or water every 15 mins. This is done in 100 degree temperatures in Texas and like I said, “I rain” not sweat.
    You might have to experiment, everyone sweats different amounts and in different rates. Also, Heat and Temperatures play an important factor.
