Drugs Send More Skiers to Hospitals Than Alcohol

Does any risk-inclined reader want to guess what the high risk factors for injuries to skiers might be?  The British Journal of Sports Medicine offers up some unsurprising answers, culled from a recent study by orthopedic surgeons at the University Hospital in Bern, Switzerland. To quote from the doctors' conclusions: "Low speed, high readiness for risk, new skiing equipment, old and
powder snow, and drug consumption are significant risk factors when
skiing." The New York Times' Well column reports that the study, based on the experiences of 782 skiers who had been treated at
three local trauma centers and a group of 496 skiers who
hadn’t, found that the chance of injury increased markedly when skiers had a high “readiness for risk,” meaning an eagerness
to head for “jumps, moguls,” instead of “the easy slopes.” One finding that is surprising is the relatively minor role of alcohol, at least when compared to that of drugs. The Times reports that the researchers found more drinking among the control group of
uninjured skiers than in the injured skiers. Drug use, on the other hand, was direct descent to the emergency room.
