The Boston Globe reports that 2 percent of adults, up from 1 percent five years ago, have tried some kind of herbal medication to keep their cholesterol counts in the healthy range. The most popular solution, the Globe reports, is fish oil.
Do the herbal cures work? Some do. The Globe reports on a small (62-patient) study from the University of Pennsylvania Medical
School that concluded that red yeast rice does substantially reduce cholesterol without producing muscle problems. That's the good news. The bad news is that a Stanford study of garlic extract, published in the Archives
of Internal Medicine and funded by the federal government, concluded
that the popular supplement did not help lower cholesterol. Then there's the news that's both good and bad: A 2001 study of soy milk and soy isoflavones, funded by the
federal government and published in the American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition, found that bad cholesterol levels
decreased more for participants who received the isoflavones than for
those who received just soy protein, but the control group that
received plain milk protein showed a comparable drop in bad
cholesterol. Yes, it's confusing.
Since when are fish oil and red yeast rice considered herbs?
The real problem with supplements that are not regulated is “Truth In Advertising”. If you research any of these substances that have merit, it is the effective dosage used in the studies to bring about the positive results that is left out of the hype by the snake oil salesmen. It might cost you a $100. a day to get any real results because the total amount in a bottle in say, grams, dividied by 30 capsules , won’t even approach what was used in some clinical trial.
It’s in Obama’s new health plan silly!
The truth is that the Big Pharma don’t want you to know what works, they have no financial interest in the. This report is made to confuse you so you go back to a Big Pharma solution. I’ve studied this stuff for the last several years after my PREVIOUS Dr. told me nothing works but drug poisons pushed by Big Pharma!
My cholesterol was 300 over a year ago. I changed my lifestyle, took walks and learned the Truth! The truth is, Red Rice yeast in combination with Niacin works better than any poisons the medical community would have you believe. My cholesterol is now well below 200 and my good cholesterol is higher!
So when you read articles that confuse you with irrelevant studies that are merely propaganda pieces from Big Pharma, remember, western medicine has no intention of keeping you healthy….. they don’t make money off of healthy people!
Is this question for real? Don’t you know that most of our medicines are based on herbal or natural cures and then made into synthetic medicines that the drug companies and pharmacies can make money from. We are brain washed to believe that synthetic drugs are good and that natural/herbal/holistic cures are dangerous.
And there is nothing at all wrong with health care for all. I lived in Europe and I know first hand how wonderful it is to have a doctor make a house call every day for around 12 bucks. The care is not inferior. This is another fallacy.
DO ANY OF YOU BELIEVE ANY REPORT THAT WAS FUNDED BY THE FEDS AND REPORTED AND TESTED BY THE DRUG INDUSTRY OR THE BOUGHT AND PAID FOR FDA ?
The reason people are trying most anything is the toxic drugs hurt MORE than they help, and the cost is atrocious !! God put the herbs, minerals for us to use , NOT most of the synthetic killers the fda approves and then the class action lawsuits start in a year or so.The health care in MOST of the good systems is integrative health, which takes the Best of synthetics and the best of alternatives. Our WHOLE healthcare industry is about CONTROL and $$$$$$$$$$!!! Not preventive or healing !!
CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHAT BRANDS–DOSAGE–AND OTHER INFO ABOUT THE RED YEAST RICE AND THE NIACIN THAT YOU TAKE AND HOW LONG BEFORE YOU GOT RESULTS?
