Few SportsGeezer readers will be surprised to learn that resveratrol, the chemical compound found in grapes that has been shown to extend the life span of fruit flies and enable mice to run farther, has found its way into pills for humans. The Boston Globe reports that the lures of eternal youth and pharmaceutical riches has propelled resveratrol pills to the head of a long line of allegedly life-extending products. According to the Globe, most resveratrol products range in strength from 10mg to over 200mg per
tablet or capsule – 5 to 100 times the amount in a 5-ounce glass of
dark red wine – and with nearly as many different sellers’ instructions
for suggested dosage. Prices also vary widely, from $10 to nearly $40 a
bottle.
Do they work? The resounding answer from scientists who are not invested in the products is “it’s way too soon to tell.” The Globe quotes Steve
Austad, a professor of cellular and structural biology at the
University of Texas and the deputy scientific director at the American
Federation for Aging Research, warning that “It will be 30 years before we know whether resveratrol is actually
working on aging – to change the rate at which people age.” In the mean time, there is always red wine.

Many scientists and researchers have to hedge their words in the press with statements like “time will tell” and the like, but resveratrol is on the path to FDA approval for serious illnesses like diabetes.
To get the amount of resveratrol needed to be effective, you’ve got to drink a lot of red wine, or drink it consistently over many years…
Important to Note: Most research on resveratrol has been conducted on animals, not people. Research in mice given resveratrol has indicated that the antioxidant might also help protect them from obesity and diabetes, both of which are strong risk factors for heart disease. However, those findings were reported only in mice, not in people. In addition, to get the same dose of resveratrol used in the mice studies, a person would have to consume 100 to 1,000 bottles of red wine a day.
