Alcohol Is Good For You, Except When It’s Bad For You

Red wine is good for you, right? And wasn’t there a Harvard study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that found that women over 50 who have one to three drinks
a week live longer? And men who have a drink at least three or four
days a week suffer fewer heart attacks? Then, what, the Boston Globe asks, are we to make of a new study by British researchers who tracked the behavior of nearly 1.3 million
women for years and concluded that having a daily glass of wine, a bottle
of beer, or other alcoholic drink raised the overall risk of cancer by
6 percent? In fact, the Globe reports, based on their results in the United Kingdom, the researchers
calculated that 30,000 American women each year develop cancer as a
result of moderate alcohol consumption.
It’s scary. And confusing. And it may come down to a choice between heart disease or a tumor. Or a margarita.
