Why You Can’t Keep the Weight Off

Finally, science has given us four credible reasons why the weight we lose keeps returning unbidden: the brain, hormones, our fat, and our metabolism all conspire to put the pounds back where they once so happily resided. The L.A. Times reports on suggesting that the human body is, sadly, designed to sabotage weight loss at every turn
— once a body has been fatter, it wants to get back to the weight that
it used to be. Physiology is cruelly changed in two ways, the paper reports: The body
needs fewer calories to maintain itself, but its craving for food is
more intense.
What to do? The L.A. Times offers hope in three directions: Exercise appears to buffer the post-diet body against regaining
weight; certain foods appear to stave off weight regain;  and medications now in development target some of the biochemistry
thought to be linked to packing the pounds back on.
Read more about glimmers of hope in the battle against eternal plumpness in the L.A. Times.
