What To Do About Your Aching Feet

Af_2
How easy is it to injure your feet? Easier than you want to know. This New York Times story about common foot injuries, mainly plantar fasciitis, and what to do about them cites a 2003 study done in Brussels that looked at the impact
of running for 30 minutes a day for one week. The paper reports the  study involved 10 subjects, all of whom were new
to the sport, and three of whom showed slight signs of foot damage before the
study. At the end of the week, half of the runners had either new or
increased fluid accumulation in their bone marrow. After only seven
days, the newbie joggers had pounded their feet into the earliest
stages of stress fracture.Yikes!
One reason feet sustain so many injuries, the Times suggests, is that they have lots of moving parts- 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 tendons, ligaments and muscles. Another reason is that they’re your feet, and you walk or run on them all day. Want to know what to about plantar fasciitis? Avoid getting it. Stretching helps. Read more about how to spare yourself the pain of foot injuries in the New York Times Play magazine.
