Treating Fatigue: Exercise Better Than Rest

Geezer is getting tired of reading about the best way to beat fatigue. Now comes a story in the Boston Globe about a new understanding of fatigue, conceived at the National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health. The paper reports that scientists now believe that fatigue has a real, molecular basis,
and that at least two major biological processes are involved: An
excess of natural chemicals called pro-inflammatory cytokines, which
the body pumps out in response to infection. And sluggish mitochondria,
the tiny organelles inside cells that make energy. What does it mean to you? The Globe tells us that both cytokine and mitochondrial problems get worse with excessive rest
and improve with moderate exercise.
Get the picture? If you’re fatigued, get up, stand up, don’t give up the fight.
