In a kind of One Two Punch for glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, a supplement taken to relieve the pain of osteoarthritis of the knee, two studies failed to find any benefit from the dietary treatment. In one study, the Los Angeles Times reports, researchers at the University of Utah and elsewhere looked at the supplements’ effects on pain relief, finding that
they were no more effective than a placebo — except (naturally) among
a subset of patients that did experience pain relief. The newspaper reports that a second, smaller study analyzed only structural damage within the knee, comparing results in people taking glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, a combination of the two, celecoxib (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) or a placebo. The researchers measured the distance between the ends of the knee’s joint bones in people taking the substances and people not taking the substances. The difference? None.

I think Researchers at the University of Western Ontario in Canada studied 178 men and women suffering from moderate to severe arthritis in their knees.
To relieve almost all types of structural pain, I recommend getting the book “The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook”.
I suffer from arthritis in the lower back with pain shooting down my legs. The pain has been steady for the last five years until recently I took the advice of an old physician. He suggested that I get glucosamine/condroitin sulfate with the hightes quantity of sulfate shown. I found a brand that has 1500 mg of glucosamine and 1200 mg of condroitin sulfate per dose of two pills a day. I’ve been on this dose for one week, and my pain is gone! I just hope the relief is perminent and not temporary.
