Soy Milk vs. Cow Milk: And the Winner Is…

Cow_rev
Is soy milk more healthful than cow milk? Is it easier to milk a soy than a cow? These are tough questions, and some answers are offered in this piece in the Scientific American. Sciam points out that cow’s milk is definitely better for you if you are a cow, but if you are a human, things get a bit more complicated.
Soy milk, Sciam reports, has the same amount of protein, but much more fiber than cow’s milk, and soy milk actually reduces the body’s
cholesterol levels. It also contains isoflavones, natural plant
hormones that act as antioxidants and have been linked to many human
health benefits including the easing of menopause symptoms, protection
against prostate problems, better bone health and even a reduction in heart disease and cancer risks. What about calcium? Sciam reports that natural soy milk has only a sixth of the calcium
of an equal amount of cow’s milk, but producers simply add calcium to equal the amount in cow’s
milk. And studies have shown that most people’s bodies absorb 75
percent more calcium from soymilk than from cow’s milk.

I for one do not believe that soy milk can be any better than cow milk. If you go to Dr. Mercola ‘s web site and read his take on soy milk you’ll understand that soy milk is not that good for the human gut. I quit drinking soy and all my gut problems shortly went away.
