Revisiting the Cell Phone Brain Cancer Connection

Last year, reports Tara Parker-Pope in her ever-thoughtful column Well, the American Journal of Epidemiology published data from
Israel finding a 58 percent higher risk of parotid gland tumors among
heavy cellphone users. Also last year, says Parker-Pope, a Swedish analysis of 16 studies
in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine showed a
doubling of risk for acoustic neuroma and glioma after 10 years of
heavy cellphone use. Yes, now that Americans have brain cancer on the brain, it’s a good time to revisit the cell phone brain cancer connection, which was largely dismissed about the time the marketing budgets of mobile phone companies ballooned. At this point, Parker-Pope says, the jury is still out. The trouble is, by the time it returns with a verdict, it may be too late:  with three billion users worldwide, even a minuscule risk would translate into a major public health concern.
