The Boston Globe reports that California researchers have developed two drugs that
mimic many of the beneficial effects of exercise, such as
increasing the body’s fat-burning ability and dramatically boosting endurance. Their study, published online yesterday in the journal Cell, showed
that the drugs can increase the activity of a master gene that controls
metabolism and muscle fibers, reprogramming muscles to burn fat and
produce dramatically more endurance. So far, the drugs have only been tested in mice, and they are not available to the general public, but Olympic contenders beware, the World Anti-Doping Agency is already working with on a test that will reveal the presence of the new drugs.

Well, considering that most people just sit on their asses and don’t ever build muscle or exercise, I’d say that this new pill would be a net benefit for the sedentary and overweight among us.
