The good news, according to this piece in Time magazine and just about every daily newspaper, is that researchers have identified five common gene variations that, when appearing in combination, boost the likelihood of prostate cancer by 400 percent (and 900 percent for those whose families have a history of prostate cancer). Time reports that tests for the variants should soon be available to all of us (men). The bad news is that the presence of the gene variants does not predict how aggressive the prostate cancer will be, so it is unhelpful to anyone trying to decide how to treat the cancer.
