New Drug Switches On Fat Burn Mechanism

French scientists studying the strange, fat-fighting power of the red wine extract resveratrol came to the conclusion that anyone who wanted to use the chemical to keep the weight off could either drink gallons of wine each day, or the scientists start build a more powerful synthetic version of the drug. They chose option number two, and the BBC now reports that in experiments with mice, even a low dose of their creation, known as SRT1720, partially protected against weight gain on a high-fat diet after 10 weeks of treatment. At higher doses, the BBC reports, the drug completely prevented weight gain. It
also improved the rodents’ blood sugar tolerance and insulin
sensitivity. The new drug, which works by shifting the metabolism to a fat-burning mode that normally takes over only when energy levels are low, is still a long way from test on humans. In the mean time, researchers advise overweight people to head back to the gym.
