The Scientific American, never an outspoken advocate of psychedelics, reports that more than a year after 36 volunteers took their first clinically monitored trip on psilocybin, the active ingredient in so-called magic mushrooms, two thirds of the group gave the experience high marks for transcendental satisfaction, and credited it with increasing their well-being. The magazine cites research conducted at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the first step of an effort to determine whether psilocybin has long-term influence on the brainâ€â€and
whether the reported mystical effects affect memory alone or stem from
other physiological changes.
