Geezer continues to be amazed at how little doctors know about prostate cancer treatments, and how little their ignorance slows their recommendations for useless, expensive, and harmful treatments. Most recently comes a study led by Dr. Siu-Long Yao of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, indicating that hormonal therapy, designed to inhibit the production of androgens, does not increase the lives of prostate cancer victims, and seriously damages the quality of their lives. The L.A. Times reports that the side effects of hormonal therapy, which involves such drugs as leuprolide (Lupron, Viadur, Eligard), goserelin (Zoladex) and triptorelin (Trelstar), includes a 10 percent to 50 percent increase in the risk of fractures, diabetes,
heart disease and sudden cardiac death; a 500 percent increase in hot flashes;
and a 267 percent increase in impotence. It also has adverse effects on fats
and cholesterol and causes enlargement of the breasts. Wait. It gets worse. The 10-year death rate from prostate cancer was 17.4 percent in those receiving no
therapy, compared with 19.9 percent in those receiving hormonal therapy.

Interesting that Sports Geezer would permit a negative article from a Doctor against the BIG Pharmas? (You do know everything is censored here, right?!)
Makes you wonder? Is the tide of US medicine changing?
All the research I have done indicates that preadjuvant hormone therapy does no good and in fact can cause harm. However, the medical system in Canada (at least where we have been referred) will not treat with either kind of brachytherapy or radiation without the preadjuvant hormone therapy. They hold all the cards – if you refuse the Lupron you will not be treated at all. For someone who is in great health otherwise and with a Gleason of 7 an PSA of 10 there is no other option but to take it. After reading all the patient reviews it makes me want to rage at a system that forces you to take a harmful treatment to get the one you want. In a few years hormone treatment will go the way of leaches for blood letting. It is truly outrageous and makes you wonder what kind of a hold the drug company has over the treatment centers and doctors. Who is funding this???
