Is an Obesity Tax a Good Idea?

No, the “obesity tax” proposed by New York Governor David Paterson does not require fat people to pay more in taxes than thin people would pay. Rather, it would impose an 18 percent tax on sugary sodas and juice drinks, a move that
state officials said would reduce obesity while raising more than $400
million a year for health programs, according to the New York Times.  The paper reports that the new tax would apply to nondiet sodas and fruit drinks containing less than 70
percent natural fruit juice, including “-ades, punches and certain
fruit nectars,” as the budget proposal put it. It would not apply to bottled water, diet sodas,
coffee, tea or milk. Read more about the tax here.
